Increasing The Horsepower Of Your Performance Car With An Exhaust System Upgrade

Posted on

Buying a performance car to enjoy on the weekends or to take to track days can be a great hobby. Making that car a little faster and adding more power can be challenging but changing things like the exhaust system can change how the car runs and help wake it up a little.

Performance Exhaust Systems

Exhaust systems used on performance cars coming from the factory are limited by the emissions standards that the car manufacturer must meet. The exhaust system needs to have good flow through it to scavenge the gases from the engine and get them out quickly.

Performance cars like Corvettes, Mustangs, or Challengers are all great and use advancements in technology that allow a better flow of fuel and air into the engine. However, they still need rapid removal of the burned gases, and that requires a good exhaust system. The faster you get the exhaust gases out of the engine, the faster and more effectively you can pack a dense fuel/air mix in and gain horsepower.

High performance exhaust systems remain the best option to make horsepower without spending a lot of money. You can buy performance exhaust systems online from dealers and manufacturers that allow you to install the system at home.

Exhaust Pipes and Mufflers

One of the most critical parts of the exhaust system is the pipes that run from the engine and out the back of your car. Larger diameter pipes that have very smooth bends in them will move more exhaust. A system that starts at the catalytic converters and replaces everything behind them with larger pipes and free-flowing mufflers that are a good starting point.

Most cat-back systems are emissions legal but make sure you verify that the exhaust system you are considering is allowed in your area to be sure. If you can not afford to replace the entire exhaust system, these high-flow systems with large exhaust pipes are an excellent way to gain power on a budget.

High Flow Catalytic Converters

Adding a set of high flow cats to the exhaust system on your car can open up even more exhaust scavaging for more performance. While you may not be gaining fifty horsepower, you may see a significant increase in throttle response with these additions.

Again, these parts may not be legal for the street in your area, so check before installing them on your performance car. There are many options that you can purchase from an exhaust system manufacturer, and if you are not sure what you need, talk to the dealer about your goals for the car, and they can help you pick the right exhaust system for your performance car. Look for systems made for your make and model like Chevy Corvette exhaust systems.
